Opera in the Streets

Opera in the Streets returns for 2011. Join us for the debut performance July 4th in Ashland, right after the parade. Look for us in the vicinity of the plaza and park along Winburn Way. Exact time and location are unknown, but stroll around the area for about an hour after the parade and you should see us once or twice.

Rogue Opera Singers on Segways

Rogue Opera Singers on Segways joined Jacksonville’s 24th Annual Victorian Christmas Parade Dec. 3 in downtown Jacksonville.

In a juxtaposition of culture and technology, singers who have performed with Rogue Opera sang while dressed in Victorian costumes and gliding on Segway PTs in the parade, provided by Segway of Jacksonville. The Segway PT is a two-wheeled, self-balancing mobility device invented by Dean Kamen. Produced and manufactured by Segway Inc. of New Hampshire, the name "Segway" is a homophone of "segue" (a smooth transition, literally Italian for "follows") while "PT" denotes personal transporter.

Computers and motors in the base of the device keep the Segway PT upright allowing riders to lean forward to go forward, and lean back to go backward, and turn by use of a "Lean Steer" handlebar. Movement is quite intuitive, easy to learn, and appears stately or elegant in execution.

A special musical presentation by Rogue Opera singers was given at the parade revue stand while engaged in this blending of modern and historic ambiance.
